The Lady from the sea, by Susan Sontag, is a surprising re-writing of the classic play from the Norwegian writer, Henrik Ibsen. Here, Sontag reconstructs the setting of the 1888 work from a kind of archaeological dig. Adding and subtracting elements, the American writer presents the story of Ellida Wangel, a woman confined “out of her element”, her husband, doctor Hartwig Wangel, and her two stepdaughters, Hilde and Bollete. Working with the conflicts present in the work explicitly, Susan Sontag brings to surface a sensitive, modern and profoundly current poetic, all while keeping true to Ibsen’s original concept.

 

A Dama do Mar, de Susan Sontag, é uma reescritura surpreendente da clássica peça do escritor norueguês, Henrik Ibsen. Aqui, Sontag reconstrói o enredo da obra de 1888 a partir de uma espécie de escavação arqueológica.  Adicionando e subtraindo elementos, a escritora americana apresenta a história de Ellida Wangel, uma mulher enclausurada “fora de seu elemento”, seu marido, o médico Hartwig Wangel, e suas duas enteadas, Hilde e Bollete. Na explicitude com que trabalha os conflitos presentes na obra, Susan Sontag faz emergir, ao mesmo tempo em que é fiel a concepção original de Ibsen, uma poética sensível, moderna e profundamente atual.
